Last week I had the great pleasure of painting a mural at The Sub, an arts and music venue/ space located in The Mission District in San Francisco. What originally started off as an opportunity to have a solo show exhibiting my recent work- soon turned into my next biggest venture into installation and site specific painting.

On the last day of painting, Emma Fineman joined me in the space to document the final bits of the mural.

How do you Translate a room into a painting? Working on this mural was really eye opening. It was no longer just a flat surface. There were obstacles - doors, ladders, outlets, pre-exististing texture etc. I wanted to find a way to embrace these awkward moments and ultimately translate a sense of energy that the space embodied. Painting is always very physical for me in the studio. I stretch canvas, hang it on the wall - paint, draw, drag it on to the floor and paint some more. This mural was not only an experience for me - but it also invited a level of interaction from the viewer, just by physically walking into the space.

What's Next? After I completed the mural, I was really concerned about how I was going to go back to canvas after a project like this. I realized that there are challenges with both. How do you activate a flat surface and bring a sense of life to it? I approached the mural with the same concept. Looking back at this, I'd say all of my paintings are just one big sketchbook preparing me for the next project. That's exciting. Nothing is fragile and everything has potential.
